My Practice

For more than two decades, my work has moved between literature, cinema, scholarship, and publishing. I am the author of various books spanning fiction and criticism, including four works of fiction—two of them translated into English—as well as essays on film, literature, and cultural politics. My creative work, criticism, and scholarship have been published throughout Latin America, Europe, and the United States, and I continue to write across genres while developing my fifth work of fiction.

My work in screenwriting began early in my career in Chile, where I wrote for television, worked as a script consultant, and taught screenwriting alongside my literary practice. Since then, I have continued to move fluidly between fiction and cinema, bringing the same attention to narrative, structure, and voice to novels, screenplays, and scholarly writing alike. Today, I continue to teach screenwriting, creative writing, literature, and film theory at Pratt Institute in New York.

In 2008, I co-founded Sangría Editora, an independent press dedicated to literature, criticism, and the arts. As an editor, I worked closely with more than eighty authors, shaping manuscripts in fiction, philosophy, art history, screenwriting, theater, and scholarly writing. Editing is not simply a matter of correction, but of listening closely enough to help each work discover its own form.

My work also extends across scholarship and education. I hold a Ph.D. in Spanish with a specialization in Film Studies, and I have taught creative writing, screenwriting, literature, and film theory in Chile and the United States. My research and publications explore Latin American literature, cinema, archives, and cultural politics, while my teaching has accompanied hundreds of students and scholars through creative projects, dissertations, and academic writing. Beyond the university, I have designed workshops for writers, artists, and children, helping participants transform ideas into stories, books, and graphic novels.

These experiences have shaped the philosophy that guides this studio. I do not separate creative writing from critical thinking, or artistic practice from rigorous reading. Every manuscript—whether a novel, screenplay, scholarly book, or essay—begins with an idea searching for its form. Although we work with industry methods, my role is to accompany writers through the conversations, revisions, and discoveries that allow each project to become fully itself.
